Did you know that when wristwatches were first invented, they were not designed for men? In fact, women were the first wearers of wristwatches. Some say the first “arm watch” was recorded when Queen Elizabeth I wore one in 1571. It was supposedly a gift from Earl Robert Dudley. At the time, men used pocket watches instead, as watches were fragile and needed protection from the elements. Also, it was felt that smaller-sized clocks could not be accurate enough for daily use. Pocket watches were similar to today’s wristwatch, except that they only used single-hour markers. They didn’t gain a minute hand until about 1680.
Many men didn’t begin to use wristwatches until the late 1880s, when the military began finding them useful. In World War I, they became required equipment for soldiers. By 1930, they outnumbered pocket watches by a 50 to 1 ratio.
