A group of Vitamix Blender owners have filed a class-action lawsuit, alleging that some blenders purchased between Jan. 1, 2007 and Oct. 1 2016 are leaving behind tiny bits of black non-stick coating in the food and drinks being mixed.
If you believe your blender could be affected and it was purchased between the 2007 and 2016 dates, you could be entitled to a $70 gift card or blade replacement from Vitamix.
The good news is that there been no reports of medical injury after consuming the non-stick coating.
According to the Blender Settlement website:
“Plaintiffs’ Complaint does not allege any medical harm resulted from any consumption … Vita-Mix produced information from an independent third-party lab reporting that the flecks are harmless when consumed and do not present a human health or safety risk.”
So, you’re not at any known risk of harm, but if you’ve noticed this problem with your blender, you’ll probably want to get the blades replaced or claim that $70 gift card to put toward another Vitamix product.
According to Top Class Actions, an Ohio judge gave the first round approval to this proposed settlement on Oct. 31, 2017. If the settlement makes it past the final approval, that’s when the settlements will be given to those who submitted a claim. About 6 million blenders are reportedly affected. The final approval hearing is set to take place on March 27, 2018.
