Buying Guide

For thousands of years, people have been fascinated by the zodiac. What is it and how does it connect with our lives? The zodiac consists of the 12 signs listed in the horoscope and it is related to the movement of the Earth within space. The placement of the Earth is derived from the constellations in the Earth’s path around the sun, and each of the 12 signs is related to the constellations as well. However, it’s important to note that the 12 signs of the horoscope don’t correspond to position of the sun in relation to the different constellations because astronomy and astrology are not the same system – and the passage of time changes everything. The zodiac is highly complex, which is why you can get more answers in a zodiac book.

You may be thinking that the position of the sun doesn’t ever change – and in that you’d be right. While the sun is not moving, as the Earth orbits the sun it appears that the sun is in a slightly different place every day based on the constellations relative to it. The sun’s motion is an illusion, since it’s the Earth that is moving around the star.

However, from someone’s perspective on Earth, it appears as through the sun is in front of different constellations at different times of the year. These constellations, such as Cancer or Gemini, for example, are astrological signs and the dates for that astrological sign are when the sun appeared to be within that constellation – about 2,000 years ago. You read that right – the dates assigned to each zodiac sign are not actually where the sun is based in the present day. The way the Earth moves through space is irregular, and with the passage of time the appearance of the sun through the constellations has changed.  For example, while 2,000 years ago the sun appeared to be between Gemini and Cancer in June, about 14 years ago it appeared between Gemini and Taurus in June. Similarly, this will continue to change as time goes on.

What to Look For

  • When you’re looking for a zodiac book, consider your goals. What are you trying to learn? This will help you determine what type of book is best for you. For example, are you interested in the history of the zodiac or how it is applied today? Do you want to learn more about how the zodiac signs affect your past, present and future or how you can find a partner that meshes with your astrological sign.
  • Be sure to take a look at who the author of the book is and what their credentials are. For example, are they an astrologist or astronomer? How long have they been in their field? Do they primarily focus on theory or practice? This will inform the value the book will provide you based on what you’re looking to learn.
  • So much of learning has to do with visuals, so take a few moments to figure out whether the zodiac book has illustrations or photographs. These can be immensely helpful in understanding things such as where each constellation is and what sign represents each constellation.
  • Kids are often just as fascinated with the zodiac as adults. While older kids may be able to read a book written for adults, younger kids may want something that is geared to them, with brightly colored illustrations, simple sentences and age-appropriate vocabulary.

More to Explore

While we know there to be 12 astrological signs related to the constellations, did you know that there are actually 13 constellations – not 12? The 13th constellation is called Ophiuchus, the Serpent Bearer, and it is physically between Sagittarius and Scorpius. If you’re born between November 30th and December 18th, then it means you’re born under the Ophiuchus constellation. However, your zodiac sign may be Sagittarius or Scorpio.
