Buying Guide
Of all the neck styles, V-neck can be the best for wearing as an undershirt. While other necklines can be tough to conceal under a button-down shirt, a V-neck handily matches the line of your shirt, especially if you leave a couple of buttons unbuttoned. But V-necks can be attractive even alone. They’re a little dressier than crew-neck tees and can even be worn under a blazer.
As comfortable as cotton is, it can absorb sweat and trap heat. If you go with cotton, make sure you choose a material that’s lightweight. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are much better at reducing moisture to help keep you dry. Often synthetic materials will be mixed with a little spandex, which also helps with moisture wicking and has the added benefit of giving you a little stretch as you move. This will help keep you comfortable whether you’re wearing your T-shirt under dress clothes or keeping it casual on its own.
What to Look For
- Some shirts build in extra padding in the armpit area to help absorb sweat and prevent embarrassing stains. You can also buy pads to attach to your clothing in that area to help with the problem. MORE: How to get rid of sweat stains from your clothes
- Eventually, that brand-new V-neck shirt can start to stretch. To reduce this risk, look for one with thicker, reinforced fabric in that area. If you have a V-neck tee that stretches, wear it around the house or under clothing where it can’t be seen.
- Some T-shirts come with tags that can be irritating. You can try to cut them out, but a little of the tag always remains. In recent years, manufacturers have begun making T-shirts in a tag-free version to prevent all that scratching.
- If you’re looking to boost your undershirt collection, you can find V-neck shirts in sets. Some come in a variety of colors. For wearing under your shirts, though, you’ll likely want to go with an option like solid white.
- Plain V-neck T-shirts can sometimes look too casual for wearing on their own. However, you can find some with embroidered logos on the chest or in a thicker fabric that dresses things up a little.
- Cotton comes in a variety of types. For optimum softness, look for a shirt made from 100 percent ring-spun cotton.
- Some T-shirts can shrink in the dryer, particularly if they’re made from cotton. Go with an option that’s preshrunk to avoid this problem.
